A Word from the Executive Director

Environmental sustainability is fundamental to the social and economic well-being of our communities. Climate change, biodiversity loss, environmental degradation, unsustainable natural resource use and poor solid waste management increasingly affect livelihoods, ecosystems and development prospects. Addressing these challenges requires practical solutions informed by evidence, innovation and effective environmental governance.

At Mazingira Yetu, we believe that sustainable environmental change begins with empowered communities and grows through strong partnerships. We connect communities, government institutions, Local Government Authorities, academia, development partners, civil society and the private sector in developing solutions that respond to environmental priorities while strengthening people's livelihoods.

Our commitment extends from climate action, solid waste management and circular economy to forest governance, environmental conservation, sustainable natural resource management, research, GIS and digital environmental solutions, policy engagement and Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning. Across these areas, we translate knowledge and partnerships into measurable environmental and social results.

We welcome communities, institutions, researchers, development partners and other stakeholders to work with Mazingira Yetu in building a sustainable and climate-resilient future. Together, we protect our natural environment, strengthen livelihoods and safeguard our environmental heritage for present and future generations.

Our Approach

From Evidence to Sustainable Action

Mazingira Yetu applies a participatory, evidence-based and partnership-oriented approach to environmental programming.

We begin by understanding environmental challenges and the social, economic and institutional conditions surrounding them. Communities and stakeholders participate in identifying priorities, developing practical responses and strengthening local ownership.

Evidence generated through research, assessments, monitoring and spatial analysis informs programme design and decision-making. We combine this information with community knowledge and institutional experience to develop context-appropriate solutions.

Implementation emphasizes participation, capacity strengthening and collaboration among relevant actors. Results are monitored to understand progress, identify lessons and support continuous improvement.

Our approach promotes sustainable systems, stronger institutions, improved environmental practices and resilient communities.
